Neurosurgery (Brain, Nerve and Spinal Cord Surgery)

The Department of Brain, Nerve, and Spinal Cord Surgery deals with the surgical diseases of the nervous system, which consists of the spine, spinal cord, and nerves. During surgeries, today's advanced technology standards such as microsurgery, neuronavigation, and neuromonitoring are used.

The Neurosurgery department works in collaboration with physicians from the Neurology, Neuroradiology, Neuroanesthesia, and Psychiatry units.

Medical technology devices such as PET/CT, CyberKnife, and Gamma Knife are used in the diagnosis and treatment process of brain tumors.

Deep Brain Stimulation (Brain Pacemaker)

Deep Brain Stimulation is used for chronic diseases that are difficult to manage and seriously affect the quality of life, caused by a decrease in dopamine release in the brain. Main symptoms include resting tremors, slowness of movement, difficulty walking, and rigidity, with additional possibilities of sleep and digestive system disorders, and psychiatric complaints.

One of the effective treatment methods for Parkinson's disease is the brain pacemaker. Besides Parkinson's disease, the brain pacemaker is used in the treatment of many movement disorders such as familial tremor disorder (essential tremor), contraction disease of certain body parts (dystonia), tic disorder (Tourette syndrome), psychiatric diseases such as obsession (Obsessive-compulsive disorder), depression, and in the field of epilepsy.

Disc Diseases and Degenerative Spine Diseases Cervical, lumbar, and thoracic discectomies, vertebrectomy, laminectomy, and spinal stabilization (instrumentation) surgeries are within the scope of this unit. Deep Brain Stimulation (Brain Pacemaker) is safely applied in our clinic for movement disorders (Parkinson's, etc.).

Traumas

This includes emergency surgical interventions for depression fractures, epidural and subdural hematomas, cranial base repairs, spinal fractures and stabilization, and spinal cord compression.

Vascular Diseases of the Brain and Spinal Cord

This includes surgeries for aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and cavernomas, endarterectomy, intracerebral hematomas, vascular anastomoses, and spinal AVMs.

Neuro-oncology

Surgical treatment of all types of brain and spinal cord tumors; meningiomas, glial tumors, cerebellopontine angle tumors, pituitary tumors, brainstem, pineal region, posterior fossa tumors, skull base tumors, extramedullary or intramedullary spinal tumors, calvarial lesions, cranioplasty surgeries, craniofacial surgery, craniosynostosis, and shaping surgeries are included in this unit.

Neuroendoscopy and Hydrocephalus Treatment

This unit covers shunt surgeries, neuroendoscopic procedures, third ventriculostomy, and fenestration of arachnoid cysts.

Functional Neurosurgery

This unit deals with microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia, placement of a vagal nerve stimulator, and epilepsy-related diseases.

Peripheral Nerve Surgery

This deals with peripheral nerve anastomoses, repairs, and surgery for nerve entrapment syndromes.

Pediatric Neurosurgery

This department deals with the surgical treatment of brain, spinal cord, and nervous system diseases in children. In our hospitals and medical centers, the diagnosis and treatment of deep-seated brain tumors such as neuroendoscopic hydrocephalus, brainstem gliomas, thalamic and hypothalamic gliomas, and epilepsy are provided.

Gait Analysis Laboratory

Gait analysis is the numerical evaluation, description, and interpretation of movements. Gait analysis is applied with a physical examination and 3D motion assessment.

Tumor Painting (Fluorescence-Guided Surgery)

Fluorescence (tumor painting) guided surgery, used in a limited number of centers in the world and in Turkey for the safe and wide resection (removal) of brain tumors and during surgeries for cerebrovascular diseases, is available at BHT CLINIC Istanbul Tema Hospital.

Technology That Maps the Tumor's Path: "Neuronavigation"

It is very important to remove the tumor without damaging healthy brain tissue during brain tumor surgeries. The "Neuronavigation" device allows for biopsies to be taken from brain tumors while preserving tissues, enabling the most accurate diagnosis for patients and the application of the most appropriate treatment.

Physical Examination: The analysis begins with a detailed physical examination, evaluation of joint movements (ROM-Range of motion), and measurement of joint motion angles (goniometric measurements). Height, weight, leg length, and joint space measurements are taken.

3D Motion Assessment: On a walking platform, the movements of markers attached to the body are detected by infrared cameras and DV cameras during walking and transferred to a special computer. The recordings made on the computer are evaluated. The recordings are evaluated in detail graphically and in 3D and reported.
