Golden Rules to Avoid Kidney Stone Pain: What Does Your Urine Color Tell You?

Our kidneys are the silent filters of our body. They clean the blood, filter out waste, and maintain the body's fluid balance. However, not drinking enough water during the day paves the way for these filters to "clog," namely, kidney stone formation.

Your Urine Color Can Be Your Body’s Alarm System
The easiest way to understand how much water your body needs is to monitor your urine color:

  • Transparent/Light Yellow: Ideal condition. Indicates you are getting enough fluid.

  • Dark Yellow/Amber: Your body is dehydrated. It means your kidneys are struggling to expel waste.

  • Orange/Brownish: There may be serious dehydration or liver/bile duct problems. You should immediately increase your water consumption and consult a specialist.

How to Prevent Kidney Stone Formation?
Kidney stone pain is a challenging process that those who experience it describe as "indescribable pain." To prevent this:

  1. At Least 2-2.5 Liters of Water Daily: Drink water not just when you are thirsty, but spread throughout the day.

  2. Reduce Salt: Excessive salt increases calcium excretion from the kidneys, triggering stone formation.

  3. Lemon and Citrus Fruits: Thanks to the citrate they contain, they have an inhibitory effect on stone formation. Squeezing lemon into water is a simple but effective method.

  4. Keep Moving: Regular physical activity helps balance the metabolism.
