Persistent 'Flu' Might Actually Be Sinusitis: Is it a Cold or Sinusitis?

In these days as we transition from winter to spring; if you suffer from persistent headaches, nasal discharge, and nasal congestion, the answer you are looking for may not be a simple cold, but Sinusitis.

What is Sinusitis?
It is the inflammation of the air cavities (sinuses) between our facial bones. While healthy sinuses are filled with air, when these cavities become blocked, bacteria or viruses multiply there and lead to sinusitis.

Test Yourself in 5 Symptoms
If you have several of the symptoms below, it is time to see an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist:

  1. Facial Pressure and Pain: Pressure felt around the eyes and cheeks that increases when leaning forward.

  2. Thick Discharge: Yellow-green colored, dense discharge coming from the nose or nasal passage.

  3. Loss of Smell: Decrease in the sense of smell and taste accompanying nasal congestion.

  4. Persistent Cough: A dry cough triggered by nasal discharge, which increases especially at night.

  5. Bad Breath and Toothache: Inflammation of the sinuses in the upper jaw can sometimes be confused with a toothache.

Ways to Cope with Sinusitis

  • Drink Plenty of Water: Ensuring body hydration helps thin the secretions in the sinuses.

  • Steam Bath: Taking a hot shower or inhaling steam by leaning over a bowl of hot water can open congestion.

  • Cleaning with Salt Water: Regularly wash your nose with salt water kits available at pharmacies or prepared at home.

  • Warm Compress: Applying a warm, damp towel to your face helps relieve pain.

We wish you healthy days.
