Attention to bone resorption in young people

Stating that attention should be paid to bone resorption in young people, Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Emrah Kovalak said that pain felt in the back, waist and hip area, fractures after minor impacts and posture disorders such as hunchback may indicate a decrease in bone density in young people.

Stating that muscle and bone health are directly related to each other, BHT CLINIC Istanbul Tema Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Emrah Kovalak said, “Muscle weakness can cause bones to weaken. Nails becoming brittle and a decrease in energy levels are also among the symptoms of bone resorption.”

Smoking and alcohol weaken bones

Referring to the causes of bone resorption, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emrah Kovalak said:

“Genetic predisposition, insufficient calcium and vitamin D intake, hormonal imbalances and sedentary lifestyle are among the risk factors. Especially smoking and alcohol use reduce bone density. Rheumatic diseases, diabetes and intestinal absorption disorders may also negatively affect bone health.

Weight-bearing exercises increase bone density

Giving information about the treatment of osteoporosis, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emrah Kovalak said: “In addition to adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, regular physical activity is of great importance.”

He stated that weight-bearing exercises increase bone density, and hormone treatments can be applied under the control of a doctor in bone loss due to hormonal imbalances.

Regular sleep and stress management is a must

Finally, emphasising that smoking and alcohol should be avoided, regular sleep and stress management should be given importance to protect bone health, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emrah Kovalak said:

“Calcium, vitamin D and magnesium supplements should be used under the supervision of a doctor. Early diagnosis and regular controls are critical for bone health.”
