Posture Disorders and Scoliosis Symptoms in School Age

Posture Disorders and Scoliosis Symptoms in School Age

With the start of the school period, heavy bags and increased screen use can threaten the developing spinal health of children. As our hospital's Orthopedics Department, we have summarized the critical points that parents should pay attention to.

1. Bag and Posture Warning
Bags carried on a single shoulder and exceeding 10% of body weight can bend the spine. Make sure both straps of the bag are worn. Additionally, keeping the head constantly tilted forward while using a tablet/phone leads to neck flattening and hunchback; it is important to keep the screen at eye level.

2. Home Scoliosis (Spinal Curvature) Check
Scoliosis can progress insidiously. While checking your child's back with the naked eye, pay attention to the following:

  • Is one of the shoulders higher than the other?

  • Is one of the shoulder blades more protruding?

  • When your child leans forward without bending their knees, does a hump (humpback appearance) form on one side of the back?
If any of these symptoms are present, be sure to consult a specialist.

3. Shoe Selection and Flat Feet
If your child steps inward while walking, if their shoes deform quickly, or if they frequently want to be carried saying "my legs hurt," the reason may be Flat Feet (Pes Planus). When choosing school shoes, models that support the sole and wrap the heel should be preferred.

Early Diagnosis Saves Lives
If you observe posture disorders, asymmetry, or persistent pain in your child, you can prevent permanent damage that may occur in the future by making an appointment at our Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic.

We wish you healthy days.
