When the teeth erupt into the oral cavity and are exposed to sunlight, these antibiotic compounds trapped in the tooth structure oxidise. These stains, which are initially yellowish, turn into dark brown or grey bands over time due to oxidation. Because antibiotic tooth staining occurs in the inner structure of the tooth (dentin) rather than on the enamel surface, it cannot be cleaned with standard whitening toothpastes or simple brushing at home.

A detailed clinical examination is essential before the teeth whitening procedure. Your dentist will first determine whether the discolouration on your teeth is intrinsic or extrinsic. At-Home Teeth Whitening

At-home teeth whitening is a method applied by the patient in their own home under the supervision of a dentist. First, an impression is taken from the inside of the mouth to prepare transparent and thin whitening trays that perfectly fit your teeth. Your dentist will give you lower-concentration whitening gels. You will be asked to squeeze these gels into the trays and wear them for an average of 4-6 hours a day or during your night's sleep. Reaching the desired whiteness takes an average of 10 to 15 days, depending on the condition of the stain.

Combined Teeth Whitening

Especially in resistant and deep intrinsic discolourations like antibiotic tooth staining, just in-office or just at-home whitening may not be enough. The old filling on the back surface of the tooth is removed, a special whitening gel is placed in the opened cavity, and the tooth is closed with a temporary filling. This process is repeated by the dentist at 3-4 day intervals until the desired colour is achieved.

Things to Consider After Teeth Whitening

There are critical rules that the patient must follow to ensure the brightness achieved after the teeth whitening procedure is permanent and to minimise potential side effects. The first 48 hours after the procedure is the period when the pores of the tooth enamel are open and most vulnerable to colourants.

  • Follow a White Diet: For the first two days, you should stay away from any food and drink that could leave a stain on a white shirt. Tea, coffee, red wine, cherry juice, cola, tomato paste, soy sauce, curry, and chocolate must strictly not be consumed. Instead, colourless foods like milk, yoghurt, chicken, rice, and white cheese should be preferred.
  • Quit Tobacco Products: Tobacco products such as cigarettes, hookahs, or cigars can rapidly penetrate the open enamel pores, causing the teeth to become yellower than before. Tobacco should not be used for at least 48 hours, and ideally for a week, after the procedure.
  • Sensitivity Management: Whitening gels can cause temporary sensitivity in the teeth. These twinges felt against the air, or very hot or very cold foods, are completely normal and expected.
