Medical Oncology

The Medical Oncology Department at BHT CLINIC is by your side to help you regain your health, offering up-to-date methods in cancer diagnosis and treatment with a multidisciplinary approach.

About the department

Receiving a cancer diagnosis is one of the most challenging moments for patients and their families. As the BHT CLINIC İstanbul Tema Hospital Medical Oncology Department, we stand by you during this difficult process with our medical expertise and compassionate approach. Medical oncology in Istanbul and worldwide is the core scientific discipline responsible for the medical treatment of cancer (chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, etc.), as well as the prevention, screening, and early diagnosis of the disease.

Although cancer treatment in Istanbul is performed in many centers, our difference at BHT CLINIC is our multidisciplinary approach that considers our patients as a whole. In our hospital, every cancer case is evaluated by a special committee called the Tumor Board (Multidisciplinary Oncology Board). In this board, where medical oncology, surgical branches, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology specialists come together, the stage and biological structure of your disease are examined in detail. The most accurate, up-to-date, and personalized treatment plan for you is created with this collective wisdom.

Cancer treatment is not just a medical process, but also a long journey that requires psychological and social support. In our clinic, our dietitians and psychologists are an integral part of the treatment team so that our patients and their families can get through this process as comfortably as possible. Our goal is to guide you with compassion at every stage of the disease, alleviate your fears and anxieties, and strengthen your belief in recovery.

Which Diseases and Conditions Are Treated?

In our Medical Oncology Department, the medical treatment and follow-up of many types of cancer, especially solid organ tumors, are performed. Our main treatment areas are:

  • Breast Cancer: High success rates are achieved with early diagnosis and modern drug treatments in breast cancer, the most common type of cancer in women.
  • Lung Cancer: Targeted therapies and immunotherapy methods are successfully applied in our clinic for the treatment of lung tumors. The general health of the respiratory tract is very important during the cancer process; for example, as we emphasize in our articles titled The Effects of Corona Virus on the Lungs and Ways of Protection or Don't Let Asthma Affect Your Life, preserving lung capacity is an important part of the treatment.
  • Gastrointestinal Cancers: Stomach, bowel (colon and rectum), pancreas, liver, and esophageal cancers.
  • Gynecological Cancers: Ovarian, uterine (endometrial), and cervical cancers.
  • Urological Cancers: Prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers.
  • Head and Neck Cancers.
  • Soft Tissue and Bone Sarcomas.
  • Neuroendocrine Tumors and Melanoma (Skin Cancer).

Diagnostic Methods

Accurate staging of cancer and determining its genetic infrastructure is the first step of a successful treatment. In our hospital, definitive diagnosis is made through advanced imaging technologies (PET-CT, MRI, CT) and biopsy procedures performed under the guidance of interventional radiology. In addition, molecular and pathological tests aimed at detecting genetic mutations of the tumor form the basis of our personalized treatment plan.

Treatment Methods and Applications

The BHT CLINIC Medical Oncology Department is equipped as an international standard chemotherapy center. The main medical oncology treatments we apply are:

Chemotherapy

These are drug treatments used to stop the growth and multiplication of cancer cells. Depending on the stage of the disease, it can be applied before surgery (to shrink the tumor) or after surgery (for preventive purposes). Thanks to developments in modern medicine, the side effects of chemotherapy can be managed much more successfully today.

Immunotherapy

This is an innovative treatment method that enables your immune system to recognize and fight cancer cells. In our center, which is among the hospitals performing immunotherapy, promising results are obtained with this method, especially in types such as lung cancer and melanoma.

Targeted Therapy (Smart Drugs)

These are treatments that target only specific genetic changes (mutations) in cancer cells. Because targeted drug therapy directly affects the tumor without harming healthy cells, it has fewer side effects and improves the patient's quality of life.

Hormone Therapy

It is a treatment used especially in hormone-sensitive cancer types such as breast and prostate cancer, to block the effect of hormones that stimulate the growth of cancer cells.

In our JCI-accredited hospital, cancer treatment is carried out in accordance with international quality and safety standards.
