Diagnosis and Screening: How Is It Diagnosed at the Hospital?

The most fundamental method used to diagnose and prevent the disease is the Pap smear test, performed during a routine gynecological exam. During this test, your doctor uses a soft brush to gently collect a small sample of cells from the cervix. These cells are then examined in a laboratory to look for precancerous changes. Using the same sample or a separate swab, an HPV DNA test can also be conducted to check for the presence of high-risk virus strains.

If screening tests reveal abnormal cells or high-risk HPV, your doctor will request a more detailed examination called a "colposcopy." During a colposcopy, the cervix is illuminated and examined with a special magnifying camera system. To establish a definitive diagnosis, a biopsy (tiny tissue samples) is taken from any suspicious-looking areas. Cervical Cancer Treatment and Staging

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the first step is to determine the extent of the disease, which is known as staging. In Stage 1, the cancer is confined solely to the cervix. In Stage 2, it has spread beyond the cervix to the upper part of the vagina. By Stage 3, it has reached the pelvic wall or the lower part of the vagina, beginning to affect the urinary tract. In Stage 4, it has spread to distant organs such as the bladder, rectum, or lungs.

Cervical cancer treatment is personalized based on the stage of the disease, the patient's age, and their desire to have children in the future. In very early stages, a "conization" procedure—where only the diseased area is removed in a cone shape—may be sufficient, preserving fertility. If the disease has advanced slightly, a "hysterectomy" (the complete removal of the uterus and cervix) is performed. In advanced stages, or when surgery is not suitable, radiotherapy (radiation therapy) and chemotherapy are used together. In recent years, smart drugs (targeted therapies) that halt the mechanisms allowing cancer cells to grow, along with immunotherapy to boost the immune system, have also been incorporated into treatment protocols.

Complications and Risk Groups

Furthermore, individuals who have not received the HPV vaccine, heavy smokers of many years, and those with suppressed immune systems due to chronic illnesses carry a high risk for developing the disease.
