Diagnosis: How Is It Diagnosed at the Hospital?

Treatment and Thyroid Surgery

The treatment of thyroid diseases is tailored to the root cause of the problem. For patients with hypothyroidism who lack hormones, daily thyroid hormone pills are prescribed to replace the deficit. In cases of hyperthyroidism, medications that suppress the overactive thyroid gland or radioactive iodine therapy are used. However, if the nodules are very large, pressing on surrounding tissues, or if there is a suspicion of cancer, thyroid surgery comes into play.

Pre-Surgery Preparation

Once a surgical decision is made, a series of tests are conducted to prepare the patient as safely as possible. Blood tests, an electrocardiogram (ECG), and an anesthesiologist consultation are standard procedures. Post-Surgery Recovery Process

Patients who have had their entire thyroid gland removed will need to take a single daily dose of thyroid medication for the rest of their lives to meet their body's hormone needs.

As part of thyroid cancer treatment, radioactive iodine therapy may be necessary depending on the post-surgery pathology results. This treatment is not like chemotherapy; it does not cause hair loss or severe nausea. The radioactive iodine, given to the patient in capsule or liquid form, specifically targets and destroys only any remaining thyroid cells.
