HoLEP Surgery: Advanced Treatment for Prostate Enlargement

The latest technological method in the treatment of benign prostate enlargement: HoLEP surgery

Giving information about HoLEP surgery applied in benign prostate enlargement, Urology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Yasin Yitgin stated that thanks to this method, prostate obstruction does not recur. Yitgin also said that sexual functions are less likely to be affected after surgery.

HoLEP surgery is increasingly preferred in the treatment of benign prostate enlargement in recent years. BHT Clinic Istanbul Tema Hospital Urology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Yasin Yitgin, who explained HoLEP surgery, which gives successful results and its effects on the patient after the operation, stated that HoLEP surgery is an operation performed under general or regional anaesthesia, using closed method and laser energy. Stating that HoLEP surgery is preferred especially in prostates of 80 grams and above, in patient groups resistant to medical treatment, Yitgin said, ‘We keep our patient on a catheter for 3 to 5 days after the operation. After receiving the probe, they can quickly start their daily life and work life.’

‘It affects sexual life less than other operations’

Stating that HoLEP surgery is less likely to affect sexual functions compared to other prostate surgeries, Assoc. Dr. Yasin Yitgin used the following statements:

‘Thanks to its superiority over other closed method prostate surgeries, the laser energy does not affect deeper tissues, resulting in less tissue damage, we do not see erectile dysfunction, especially erectile dysfunction. Ejaculation (ejaculation) dysfunction is less common compared to other prostate surgeries.’

‘The possibility of recurrence of prostate obstruction is very low’

Yitgin said, ‘If we look at the wide scans, we see symptomatic benign prostate enlargement in one of every two men aged 50 and over. The feature of this surgery is that we theoretically do not expect prostate obstruction again, since we completely remove the adenoma part, which is obstructive compared to other closed method prostate surgeries. We do not eliminate the risk of prostate cancer in patients after surgery. Because the cells in the peripheral zone, that is, in the capsule part of the prostate, where prostate cancer develops with a probability of 85-90 per cent, still remain in the patient.’

‘Even if there are no symptoms, you should be checked every year’

‘I recommend that all men over the age of 40-45, with a family history or without a family history and over the age of 50 should have an examination and examination by a urologist without any urination complaints,’ said Yitgin, ’There may be no symptoms, there may be no urination complaints. Nevertheless, prostate examinations should be performed once a year. In patients who become symptomatic, adequate response may not be obtained from surgical or medical treatment after bladder dysfunction is established. In prostate enlargement, complaints such as difficulty in starting urination, straining, straining, interruption, bifurcation, inability to empty completely, as well as frequent trips to the toilet, waking up for more than 1 urine at night, feeling of urgent urination, not reaching the toilet and urinary incontinence may occur.’
